Introduction to Anesthesiology Talk

The first meeting of the year is an introduction of the incoming first-year students and others to the organization and the field of anesthesiology. Our faculty advisor gives a brief presentation about the responsibilities of an anesthesiologist, residency, and the various sub-specialties. This is followed by a question and answer session addressing specific concerns the students may have. It is at this meeting that we brainstorm ideas for activities for the upcoming year, schedule all of the workshops, hold elections for office, and identify members interested in the shadowing program. We will also take the names of those students who think they might be interested in attending the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual convention later in the fall. This event will be catered of course!

One-On-One Shadowing Program

Students interested in shadowing an anesthesiologist are paired with an attending physician for a one-on-one shadowing experience. Once matched, the student has the opportunity to gain as much experience as they would like with their mentor throughout the school year. Arrangements are made with on a case-by-case basis, generally for MS-I / MS-II during the summer break, and for MS-III / MS-IV as an adjunct to clinical rotations (if time permits), or as an elective rotation that is coordinated through VCOM at a hospital of the students choosing –either a VCOM hospital affiliate or as an away rotation. Generally these last from 2 – 4 weeks. Please contact Dr. Lee or the ASIG president for more information.

IV Workshop

This hands-on workshop is dedicated to learning the basics of intravenous catheter placement. An attending teaches the correct techniques and supervises the students practicing on dummy arms and/or willing volunteers.

Airway Workshop

This is a favorite of all our organization's activities! This is where students learn various techniques of endotracheal intubation and airway management. After becoming familiar with the techniques and equipment, students are able to practice intubation and mask/bag ventilation on adult and pediatric dummy models.
